Michael Crichton is a favorite of mine.  He is the author of "Jurassic Park", which some people don't know was a novel before it was a movie series.  I enjoyed "Andromeda Strain", another of his books, more, though.

My fav book of all time is Misery from Steven king, horrific but darkly comic, loved the film also but the book is even better and disturbing.
